What’s On

North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival
The North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival is North Carolina’s leading festival of improv and stand-up comedy. With between 500 stand-ups and improv comics and 10 days of nonstop knee-slappers, the ninth annual Festival promises to leave thousands doubledover, howling with busted guts. Splitting the difference between professional convention for comics and over-the-top extravaganza for the lucky public (five venues host daily shows), the event celebrates humor in all its forms. The festival places a decided emphasis on improv, with ample room for audience participation. Featuring performances by comic artists from across the United States and Canada, tickets run $7 to $20 per show.

Carrboro Music Festval
Carrboro is all about music. This day long, free festival features a ridiculous amount of music (more than 150 different acts) of all types, spanning the range from bluegrass to rap and everything in between. During the festival you’ll find music at just about every outdoor and indoor venue imaginable…. Consider it our own southern Woodstock without the mud and the tents. Did we mention it was free? Enough said.

Carrboro Film Festival
We do love everything local here in Carrboro, so we created a film festival to highlight local filmmaking talent. You can’t get much more indy than this. And given the nature of our town, a lot of interesting and well made films are shown each year at this festival, held at the Carrboro Century Center.

Carrboro July 4th Celebration
Against a backdrop of a town draped in American Flags, there’s a parade down Weaver Street culminating in speeches, music and arts and craft booths set up all around City Hall. Inevitably our Mayor reads the Declaration of Independence and all of us line up for fresh-squeezed lemonade. The only question is who will win the water-melon seed spitting contest.

Carrboro Day
Did we mention that we love our town? And that we have plenty of chutzpah, enough that we created a day just to celebrate, well, ourselves? You’re invited, naturally. Come on down and enjoy some good old fashioned southern hospitality as we tell stories, share photographs, music, dancing and games.

The Orange County Artists Guild Annual Open Studio Tour
Carrboro artists open up their studios to the public each year as part of this annual tradition set up by the Orange County Artists Guild. We’re thrilled that this one time a year we get a map and an invitation to peek into the work space of our favorite local artists.

Piedmont Farm Tour
Wow…. This is actually the largest farm tour in the nation. Right here, in our tiny corner of heaven. Come on all ye locavores – folks who seek out locally grown, produced or raised food. Carrboro is full friendly farmers ready to show you where your food comes from. We celebrate these folks everyday, and once a year we’re able to visit their farms and let them know how important they are to us. Not to be missed.

Paperhand Puppet
Since 1998, we have been using corn starch, bamboo, your old house paints, and other assorted junk to create giant puppets, masks, shadow plays, and performances for all ages. We tell stories, beat drums, paint cardboard, sew cloth, get sweaty, push boundaries, and carry heavy things to help make the world a better place.

Our parades, pageants, and shows are celebrations for everyone to enjoy; they are expressions of our love, for the earth and its creatures. Community is the lifeblood of PAPERHAND, helping us in so many ways.

HoopPath

The HoopPath is a hoopdance curriculum founded and taught by master hooper Jonathan Baxter, who got his start with the hula hoop several years ago both in his Carrboro backyard and on the lawn at Weaver Street Market. Baxter developed his unique, myth-based approach to teaching hoopdance through hundreds of hours of blindfolded practice. These days he and his partner Ann Humphreys travel all over the US and Canada, teaching hoop moves that were channeled through the extraordinary environment of our little town, where live music, creativity, tolerance, and the ethos of the good neighbor nurture and sustain so many unconventional art forms.
